Just got back from Corflu.
Thursday before I went I had an interview. Friday, a half hour after arriving in the hotel in SF, I got a call from Seattle. I got the job. So I had a great weekend. Would have anyway, but it got that much better.
Had an article in Chunga.
2 of 3 founders of Corflu were there. I spent the night at one of the founder's house. It's a little mind boggling that I was at the first Corflu 22 years ago.
I now own a giant bright green blow up alien.
I almost hurt myself laughing at the APA play Andy Hooper wrote for Saturday night, Read and Enjoyed, But No Comment.
I also now own a verrry kewl just the right size black canvas bag for fanzines courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] replyhazy! All the zines I got at the con are in there now.
On the way back today, the flight in SF was delayed in Seattle by about an hour (or more). On the way to the airport at 8:30 a.m. I discovered I had left my phone in the hotel restaurant. When I went to pick up Randy from the airport (I was supposed to get here 2 hours before him, but it was really 40 minutes) he handed it back to me.
I had a great time at the con and it was very well run.
I heart my friends. It was just what I needed.

Where/what is the job?

With NW Women in Law, helping with their database conversion, fund raising, newsletter, then later, doing the web page. Starting out part time but that's OK for now.

Remind me how much I mean to pub my ish. I mean, to keep my connections in that world even when I can't travel far. (Latest big trip incentive is about a reason to hike 3.5 miles uphill on snowshoes....)

I meant to print something out, too, but I did have an article. I got to help count votes Saturday night and it was fun. Lots of good zines came home with me.

p.s. I have to say I'm glad I don't live in that kind of snow. It was almost 60 today in Seattle (or was off and on for the last two weeks).

and I say "Pub Your Ish, Now!"

Especially nowadays that printing & postage costs needn't slow one down unless the printed object is felt necessary. Just do it. I give myself such good advice....

Hmm. Haven't seen anything yet. It's probably bobbing around in the ether between the worlds somewhere.

What exactly did you say, hey?

what be a corflu?

Date: 2005-03-01 08:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tamiam.livejournal.com
The word Corflu comes from Correction Fluid, a little bottle of blue stuff that was used to correct mistakes on carbon copies and stencils typed (cut) for mimeographing fanzines. It is also a small convention of people who put out zines usually having something to do with science fiction, and used to use the stuff when zines were hand collated and put out on pulp paper, and people hand lettered the titles and illustrated them. This type of activity has been going on since the 30s, I think.

It moves around and started out in San Francisco; next year it will be in Toronto. It was started by fans who wanted a convention of just the people they went to Worldcons (World Science Fiction Conventions) to see.

Guests of Honor for Corflu Conventions are chosen by drawing a name out of a hat of everybody at the con. I've never been picked yet, though I have my speach ready for when I do.

It wasn't the same without you, but we were impressed by the healthy number of British fans who did make it to California.

The penalty of doing this part-time degree, alas, is not being able to travel in term-time ... especially when class is on a Monday. I was, I admit, envious, as I'd like to have done the Corflu/Potlatch double again, and in San Francisco, which is one of my favourite places.

Pah. I sort of wish I'd gone now. OTOH I would be even more hassled about work..

And had I gone I'd have missed some useful stuff yesterday ... on the other hand, having slept badly because of blocked sinuses, I feel jetlagged anyway today, so I got the bad effects for free.

Missed you. I had an article in Chunga; I haven't done any fanac since the 80s I think. It was a very good time.

When do we stay at home guys get Chunga?!!!

Congrats on job!

Thanks! I needed it.

You'll have to ask Randall or Andy or carl regarding you stay at home guys. Everyone looked tired carrying around the mountains of zines. Well, like Randy brought a pile, but there was some kind of Brit/American exchange thing where he ended up with a pile about the same size as he got rid of, to distribute in the states. I'm sure glad I had my new bag to carry them around in.

Well, nothing official like a con, I don't think. But we could Make something happen since you'll be in town!

Just a minute, I'll go get my bag.

OK. Zoo Nation (3 issues, though some got a complete run of 6 before me). Hi-Vis Girl that maybe used to be joie de vivre. Fringe. A fake Chunga that is really a Crazy From the Heat. Number One. Little Brook. WorldConNomicon. 22 Times (all the progress reports for Titanium). And the program book. I am Tantalum #73, atomic weight 180.9479 according to the Periodic Table on the inside of the back cover.

Sorry. Fringe from [livejournal.com profile] akirlu. WorldConNomican is the Worldcon report from James Bacon for 2005 TAFF. Number One (#7) is from Mike McInerney of Daly City, CA.

We watched the Oscars on Sunday in the bar, with special movie postings on the walls and special Oscar food supplied by the hotel. You would have had a lot to say in the serious discussions about movies old and new, between Brits, Aussies and Us. I thought about you when I was explaining some documentary or foreign film I had seen at SIFF. You know, like Wheeping Camel.

Let's get to another filum soon, please.

Mi sofabed es su sofabed. Mmm, Big Joe's diner breakfasts!

I am so pleased you got a really great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you enjoying yourself so much among your friends where you are very much treasured. You were overdue a major burst of happiness like that.

I'm very happy with the way the convention turned out. It seemed exactly as fannish as the first one. You think you're boggled twenty-two years later!

I could eat a Big Joe's diner breakfast right this very minute. And since I have a new job I am that much closer to being able to replace my 20+ year old mattress with something as comfortable as su sofabed.

Thank you. It was a good place to be boggled, and I'm glad founding mothers were there. You'all did a fantastic job.

Only now we have to go out and get the Sponge Bob game! Socks... I see socks...

Sponge Bob socks? OK. I would wear those whilst playing the game. Or are you talking about making them? I think I saw them in the mall around xmas time.

UR Right! Seeing you rocked BT! There were a lot more LJers there than I thought there would be. Helped to have a little white ribbon.

Maybe since I'm working I could afford Madison this year. We'll see.

Yeah you!

Go girl.

Congrats on the job - and the fun.

If I couldn't be there, having you there is a good 2nd prize.
